Happy Holidays!

2010 has been a truly wonderful year. I am looking forward to writing my year in review post between turkey comas and days spent dancing in the snow!

Looking forward to January, I will be offering some cool 2 for 1 deals in the new year before LanaBetty and I move to the big costal city of Vancouver!

Until then, drive safe, enjoy the carbs and have a happy holiday!

It's the journey...

I've been re-thinking my last blog post, about preparing for craft fairs. I said that I love the preparations involved. I said that the actual fair portion of the whole ordeal was really the relaxing part. That being said, I found this image and found it quite suiting.

The journey to the adventure is really the best part. Anticipation for awesome. Building realistic and unrealistic expectations about how the adventure will go. Think about christmas. It's not really about opening the gifts (I mean, I love presents, don't get me wrong), but it's really about imagining what is inside the cute little wrapped boxes.

The journey truly matters. So make the best of it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Soopsee & LanaBetty make awesome

The other day, I was searching Etsy for tools to increase readership, item clicks, and hearts. I read about Soopsee and decided that because it was free, it was good for me!

Setup was easy and painless. The site allows me to connect my google friends, google analytics, my blogger blog, and my etsy shop, all in once convenient webspace. This is what I hope for in the future with LanaBetty.com, but for now, soopsee will have to suffice.

A day spent at a craft fair.

Spending a day at a craft fair is actually quite easy. It's the fun part; interacting with people, meeting other crafters, and making sales. I really look forward to craft fair day, because it means all the hard work is really over.

To prepare for a sale, I have to take a good hard look at my display, inventory, and my clothes. Once I've signed up for the fair, paid the fees (if there are any), and marked the date on my calendar; the prep work can begin.

I start with my displays. At every show I attend, I make notes about the show and about my displays and other crafters displays. What I think looks good, what needs improving, if any repainting needs to be done (I have two display tables that are built like stairs that have black matte paint on them. They scuff quite easily). Once I've reviewed my notes, I set to work of re-organizing my tools/supplies and make sure that I have all of my jewelry display racks and lights working, make sure i have enough business cards and generally that everything is clean and organized and ready to go.

Next; I look at my inventory. What pieces sold the best at my last show (look at my notes again). Which pieces did people touch or pick up, but didn't buy? Do I need to re-price some things? I have this deep seeded fear that I will get to the craft fair and won't have enough inventory. That there will be hoards of earring hungry women fighting to be the first to buy my jewelry - so I start crafting. I spend an increasingly large amount of time making earrings as the days count down to the fair. I worry I won't have enough, and so I usually have too much for the show (which is good! I would way rather too much!).

The finishing touches revolve around my clothes. I will be representing my business, so it's important to put my best foot forward. I ensure my dress shirt is ironed, my clothes are clean, and that I'm feeling superfine. Boozing before a show is not advisable, but can be done - showing up hung over or still drunk to a show is a big no-no. I want people to feel like I am approachable and friendly and my appearance is the first thing they see to get that feeling.

The day of the show is the best day. My worries disappear and I get into go-mode. I'm focused on engaging my customers and on making potential customers actual customers. I ask how people are doing, I try to notice if they have fabulous accessories and I try to engage them in conversations. The longer they spend in front of me table, the more likely that they will spend money at my booth - be it because they like my creations or like my attitude. Either way, I am winning. I keep my papers out and make notes about the show as it's going on (so I can review and improve for the next show) and I try to have a really great time!

So the next time you go to a craft fair, smile back at those vendors, they've put a lot of time and energy into their displays and their products and for the most part, their stress is gone and they just want to know you're having a good day, so say hello, ask them about their products and have a great time!

October 2nd I attended the Streaming Cafe Craft Sale (www.streamingcafe.net) - the cafe gave out free coffee vouchers for friends of vendors and the music was on and fantastic the whole day through. I will definitely be going back to participate in their fairs again in the future, hopefully we can get more people to come and see all of our hard work!

I created a treasury on Etsy today. I could surf etsy all day long.

Especially when looking at Elephant Themed items!

The future is bright.

It looks like all of my hard work is starting to pay off.

After the Mardi Gras Festival, in which, I sold many earrings and gave out many business cards, I was contacted by the owner of such a beautiful, fantastic, and charming little Store: Frock Clothing.

Kaela and I traded a bunch of excessively long emails and I'll be honest, seeing her email "new" in my inbox brought a smile to my face. She told me how great my earrings were and that she would love to feature them in her store! She guided me through the process (as I've never sold my jewelry in a real business before) and she is a gem.

I am finishing up her order this weekend and will be giving her my most 'vintage' pieces, because Frock is a vintage and retro consignment shop!

I will be posting soon about the pros and cons to consignment, but for the time being, consignment sounds hella-good to me!

Christmas is coming!

Today I received confirmation for my booth at the Christmas Craft Show!

When: November 13 - 14 (Sat & Sun)
Where: Prospera Place
Booth: 17 (I'll be IN the arena, on the outter bowl).

Why did I choose 17? For two reasons. First, is that it was the cheapest (if 270$ is cheap!). Second, is that the outter bowl had the wider walking isle. I figure more people will walk the outter bowl than go through the jumble of booths through the center.

What I'm excited about for this show, is that everything is provided for me. Table, Table Skirt, Electricity, You name it! I'll just have to string up my banner and have a blast!

I'd better start making earrings now for that event. I can't wait!

A view of things to come.

It's been an interesting week, that's for sure.
LanaBetty.com is so close to being live, I am already swelling with pride. The anticipation is killing me though.

As a result, I've had to look to other venues to occupy my time, instead of leaning over my brothers shoulder while he HTML's...

I've finally updated my blogger html. I'm pretty happy with it. Adding the "Tweet This" and "Like" tabs were a bit tricky, but I figured it out in the end.

I am hoping to use this adventurous theme for the time being and then, looking toward the future, update my theme with the months, or the seasons.

Saturday Night

Enjoying the evening after a wine tour and all you can eat sushi. Relaxing in a camping chair outside the garage, sipping Peller Estates Pinot Blanc 2008.

Listening to the men contemplate longboards, beer, and the universe.

Testing

This was posted from my itouch!

The Contemplative Cat

The Contemplative Cat, originally uploaded by Lana.Hicks.

This painting makes me smile every time I look at it. Right now it is sitting over behind my left shoulder on the wall across the living room. It doesn't get a lot of light, so when I look at the picture I took of it on my monitor, I smile again. The colors are actually perfect. The Cat wants to go up the tree, but she stalks, she waits, she contemplates. She sees the seasons change as the leaves from above flutter to the ground and still she waits. For the right moment to pounce. I have been offered money for this painting and still I refuse. It comes from me. It is me. Colorful and Playful.
